A scarf, also known as a Kremer, muffler or neck-wrap, is a piece of fabric worn around the neck, or near the head or around the waist for warmth, cleanliness, fashion or for religious reasons.

For thousands of years, men and women on every continent, and in pretty much every culture, have worn lengths of fur, soft hide or woven fabric for warmth, to soak up sweat, for ceremonial or religious reasons, as protection from wind and dust, as a mark of status, or simply to appear attractive.

According to history, the first scarf was made in Ancient Rome and it was called Sudarium from the Latin word "sweat cloth". The scarf was not purposely been use for protection during the winter season but just plainly to clean off their sweat. The Romans put it around their neck and sometimes tied it to their belts. Before, men usually wears it for cleaning their bodies but later on, the scarf was used also by women which were then made of cloth or silk as a part of their fashion ornaments.

During the reign of Emperor Cheng of China, scarves were made of cloth and used to identify his officers or his high rank soldiers. A silk scarf during 1000 B.C. in China was made by hands. A scarf for them is used displayed as work of art by skill people.

In the Rome of Caesar senators add a silk sash or scarf to their togas. The silk scarf has become a status symbol here as well.

12th century (Middle Ages) Wealthy women wear high headdresses with fine scarves hanging from them. Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine appears to have been a particular trendsetter.

This small scarf history review leads to the conclusion, that scarf was and still is very important and popular accessory around the world, that says a lot about the person .
